Tuesday After School & Junior Program for the 2007/2008 Season is now posted.
Welcome Back Curlers and Families
We would like to start the year out by welcoming you all back again this year. Another season of curling is soon approaching and we are beginning to get things in order for the new year. There is lots to see to and of course the “After School and Junior Program” is one important aspect. We have implemented a new structure to the After School & Junior Program this year that will help to address the concern that parents have voiced regarding learning more skills while on the ice. This can only happen if there are more parents and Adults willing to volunteer their time to help during ice time. You do not have to be a curler to help.
After School Program: (Grades 1-6)- $50.00/each
The After School Program will be taking place on Tuesdays from 4pm-5pm. This will be for grades 1-6.
First day of the Program will be Tuesday, November 13th, 2007. A complete Schedule will be available at the beginning of the Program.
This year we will be introducing a Merit Program that will help encourage the kids to learn the skills they are being taught in order to move onto the next level.
This program will be full of fun activities structured in a way that would give the kids introduction to curling. Some of the ways to do this are in games such as “rock riding” This would give the kids the confidence of sliding up the ice. Others such as “pop goes the weasel” would give them the introduction to delivery.
Volunteers: While I will be down on the Ice with the kids, Every sheet should have 1 Adult on it to help encourage the kids to keep on track. The Junior volunteers are there to help with the skills.I am looking forward to seeing your name on a sign up sheet to take turns with this.
We are currently working on setting up some fun events between Western Curling Club and ourselves.
Storm dates:
If there is no school due to weather, there is no curling.
If there is no school due to parent teacher, conferences, etc., there WILL BE CURLING AS SCHEDULED.
Junior Level Program
As our Program has been great at introducing the sport to the kids, we now have to focus on what has to be done to better the program. In order to accommodate the advancing levels of our curlers, we will help our athletes grow so that they will be on a level playing field with the rest of the kids from the other clubs. More focus on expanding the basic skills already put in place will be a priority in the junior level program.
While some are happy just coming and playing a basic game of curling, others are more focused on wanting to learn more about the sport and competing at a higher level.
That’s why we have decided that it would best suit the needs of the students to have 2 levels offered in the Junior Program.
If your child wants to be, but is not yet part of a team, they should still sign up for the competitive program. There, he/she will learn the skills they need to be part of a competitive team. Others will do the same and a team may be formed out of those athletes. This way we will know who is interested in competitive curling. Tuesdays- 5pm-7pm- Junior Intermediate Program- Age 12yrs - 20 yrs. $100.00/each Thursdays- 7pm-9pm- Junior Competitive Program- Age 12yrs - 20yrs. $100.00/each First day of the Program will be Tuesday, November 13th, 2007. A complete Schedule will be available the beginning of the Program. The Junior Program will also be introduced to the Junior Merit Program. This will have more structure with their skills and more focus on drills and being able to complete tasks. While the Juinor teams from the MLCC have made terrific stides over the past few years, bringing the trophies home, we still lack the discipline of focus and mind preparations needed for Provincials. At the Junior Level, the game of curling is now being played with more focus on skills, rules of the game, and knowledge of “why they (the curling rocks) do what they do”. Team work, knowing the position you play, and the importance of each position are some of the things we will be focussing on. Readiness for Provincial competitions will be a focus of the coaches and participants. While similar things are focussed on in intermediate level as in the competitive class, it is done at a smaller level, with the game being more the focus than the competition. This is a much better approach for those who wish to learn the sport as more of a recreation rather than a competition. Also better for those who are just beginning to learn the sport.. To do these things, a coach is needed for each sheet. 4 is adequate. All teams are encouraged to find a Coach for their team and the coaches are asked to come on Tuesdays to help coach their team/s. Each coach will be given a copy of the Junior Merit Program so that all juniors have the same advantages of learning the same skills. Junior Draw Night- Thursdays- 4:30pm-7pm On Thursdays, a Junior Draw will be placed on the wall. All teams will be signed up for this and expected to show up on time. You must be on the ice on time and expected to be off the ice on time. Points will be awarded to teams to begin their games on time and finish a full 8 ends. Certificates and awards will be awarded to the teams who collect the most points. Winning your games will not be the only way or most important way to collect points. Storm dates: If there is no school due to weather, there is no curling. If there is no school due to parent teacher, conferences, etc., there WILL BE CURLING AS SCHEDULED. Also: All Junior members are entitled to sign up for any of the Adult Evening Draws. Sign up for these draws will take place Registration Night. The Adult Draws are on Mondays-7-9, Wednesdays-7-9, and Thursdays-7-9 Note: It is very important that if you decide to sign up for adult draws that you show up!! If, for some reason, you cannot make it to that night\'s game, you MUST let your Skip know and YOU should try your best to find another player to take your place. You will get a phone call from your skip if it is canceled due to weather. This is a great way for juniors to learn more from the Adult Curlers and for the Adult Curlers to pass on their experiences. We recommend that you sign up as individuals rather than as teams. You will learn more this way. New this Year: Island Wide 15 & Under, 20 & Under Junior Mixed Bonspiel Sponsored By: Island Petroleum January 18th-20th , 2007 $80.00/team. First 12 teams payed in each division will be excepted. For entry form and complete rules for this event, contact Rushell or visit the website: www.mlcclub.net .
